Laura is showing one of the Memes'
sleeping huts. Three dogs sleep in the sand
outside the huts, inside the walls.
Meme Loini is the head of the
homestead and Pandu is her 3-year old grandson.
They are in front of grasses she has cut and
tied which will be used to repair the roofs
of the huts. We taught Pandu to say "cookie
please" and "thank you."
Several groups of hens and chicks
also share the homestead with us, although they
mostly stay out of the buildings and huts.
Laura and Nepo, who at 14 is
Meme Loini's youngest child. Way behind Laura,
you can just see the black plastic tarp surrounding
the shower, which is cold water only, but it
does beat bucket showers.
Laura's school, as seen from
the homestead. She has a very short commute.
Our first morning, we were honored
by a special program at the school. As you can
see by this souvenir program, there were dancers,
gifts for us, singing, and short speeches.
All the learners were thrilled
to see us. Here they are surrounding Diane and
I as we were leaving. They were more excited
to see the "memes," mothers, than
they were to see David, a teenager.
The three travelers, Pat (me),
Diane and David, with the ever-present Pandu.
Laura in front of her class of
45 learners. They are in grade 8 and range from
13 to 25 years-old.
David leaving the facilities,
which we almost got used to.
The sunsets on the last few days
before we left were beautiful!
Meme Loini and Meme Helevi holding
Pandu as we left. Pandu really wanted to come
with us.

This is the road to Laura's
homestead. I wish I had a picture of David,
the six memes(ladies), and me trying to push
the car out of the sand at night when we got
stuck, twice.
This is the homestead from the
outside. Usually 2 women and 2 children live
here, although various cousins, brothers, grandchildren,
etc., come and go all the time.
Inside the homestead are several
small huts, buildings, and designated areas
for sleeping, cooking, storage, or greeting
friends.
